the story: technically, i've known grace since i was a fetus. our families lived together in washington, d.c., (before grace and i were born) and have been very close ever since. although we've never lived in the same city, our families vacationed or visited each other often, so we grew up together, in a way. i am blessed enough to be reunited with grace at samford this year.

your [shade]: the ocean (yes, i really think it's a color).

your [escape]: i mostly drive around really fast in my car. i used to lay on the floor and listen to the beatles of dave matthews band.


your [pet peeves]: when someone bakes a cake and drops it and has to bake another one (that didn't just literally happen to me or anything...)

your [guilty] pleasure: i love baking desserts and eating the majority of them right away.

your childhood [ambition]: i really wanted to be an astronaut. it was a hardcore obsession. that dream died when i went on mission space, a space shuttle simulator, at disney world.

your [location]: samford university. i spend my time painting, in the theatre, or doing nothing in my room. i don't have a roommate. it's boring sometimes.

the story: rachel and i met in preschool dance class, but our relationship remained strictly professional until she asked me to be her best friend on the playground in kindergarten. we eventually went to separate schools, but she has remained my best friend for almost fourteen years. we now live and study art together. many people at samford can't tell us apart, so we each answer to both rachel and alex. hey, she's not a bad person to be mistaken for.

your [soudtrack]: if you know me at all you know i love me some johnny flynn. i will always have a special place in my heart for death cab and ben folds. right now i’m loving “impossible soul” by sufjan stevens (gets better the more i listen), “sleep all day” by the rural alberta advantage, and “fireworks” by animal collective (please do not confuse this with the katy perry song).

your [script]: bright star, into the wild, walk to remember, an education, (500) days of summer. what can i say, i like movies with sad endings.

 your [rough draft]: a farewell to arms by ernest hemmingway, the giver by lois lowry, into the wild by jon krakauer. i particularly enjoy reading young adult science fiction novels. i am reading crazy love by francis chan right now (i want to be as passionate as him). 

 

your [shade]: i’d like to say i don’t have a favorite color, that i love all of them equally, but i can’t lie to myself any longer. there is nothing better than a stroke of candy apple red on a canvas.

your [inspiration]: passionate people, music, writing, art. i love being inspired.

your [origins]: i hail from the capital of the great state of alabama, montgomery. i love my house (my dad designed and built it and it is beautiful). montgomery, though quite boring, has some interesting places. it has an impressive art museum and shakespeare festival. downtown is trying to become hip. i love it because that is where my family lives.

your [fondest] memory: i can not put my finger on one specific moment i find fonder than any of my memories. i am happiest when i am with people i am completely comfortable with and we have no plans other than to enjoy one another’s company.

your most [embarrassing] moment: i have embarrassing moments everyday. i know i sound like the everyday angsty teenager. but i really am awkward and i mostly endure it... unless i do something weird in front of someone that does not know me. one of my most embarrassing moments involves me being in a canadian suburb and ending up in a garage of teenage boys by myself.

your biggest [challenge]: not to judge people i do not know or don’t know well. not becoming obsessed with people i do not know.

your [proudest] moment: anytime someone i find interesting remembers my name.

rachel, you are my other half. you make our slightly-smaller-than 12"x12" prison cell a home. i owe so much of who i am now to who you were in the past. you are wildly creative, incredibly insightful, wonderfully sensitive, unconditionally accepting, and constantly humble. you appreciate the beauty of the world and the people in it. you are full of a quiet joy that soaks through your skin and into the souls of those around you. saying yes on that playground was the best decision i ever made. keep dancing, my favorite android.
